If you see an overloaded ship crossing the ocean, that's probably just our shipment of miniatures to be released this August. These are some big miniatures; after all, it's for our new Huge set, Legendary Evils! This set features 40 new miniatures for DMs to bring to the table. Like Dangerous Delves, each box contains one of eight visible miniatures, but for Legendary Evils that visible miniature is Huge!
Let's cut to the chase -- this is an awesome set. I've seen one common question constantly pop up in the forums: "What do you get in a booster?"
First, like all Huge sets, the distribution is a little different from a standard set. Previous Huge sets have had uncommon and rare Huges. This time, each Huge figure has a rare-quality paintjob, but they are even easier to collect than the uncommons in previous sets.
Along with the Huge, you get two of eight possible common miniatures. These are all figures you can use in quantity, such as goblin cutters and human rabble.
Dangerous Delves assured you a large figure in each booster and we like the way that worked out, so we're doing it again in this set. Each box contains one of 12 possible Large rare miniatures. Buying 12 boosters gets you all eight Huge figures (plus four duplicates), and you have the chance of collecting all 12 Large rares. This scheme means that collecting a full set of Legendary Evils should cost about the same as collecting all of Dangerous Delves.
In addition to a rare Large figure, each box also contains one of 12 Medium or Small rare miniatures. Yes, that means two rare miniatures in each booster! Why? Other possible distributions for a 40-miniature Huge set with eight visible Huge miniatures would have required either going to 16 rares in a single slot, which makes the set extremely expensive to collect, or cutting back to only four common figures, and that's not good for miniatures you want in hordes.
But enough babble from me -- here are the miniatures!
What would Dungeons & Dragons be without dragons? It's been a pattern to have a chromatic dragon in each Huge set since Giants of Legend, and Legendary Evils follow suit with the Elder Green Dragon. The look of this dragon was updated for 4th edition, making it only natural that we'd choose this dragon for this set.
What would a dragon encounter be without treasure? When I first arrived at the company a year and a half ago and started writing the art order for this miniature set, I was looking through the developed version of Draconomicon and found the hoard scarab in the Draconic Parasite section of the book. This is exactly the sort of oddball creature that I like as a miniature. The immature Hoard Scarab Larva Swarm is nearly indistinguishable from a pile of gold coins, meaning this common miniature serves two purposes: it's both a monster and a prop!
I mentioned while previewing Dangerous Delves that we'd do all the githyanki and githzerai seen in the Monster Manual this year. ForLegendary Evils, the Githzerai Mindmage and the Githzerai Cenobite finish up the githzerai. (In addition to these two miniatures, next month also features the preview of the githzerai race on D&D Insider. These two rare miniatures may be perfect representations of your male and female githzerai monks! If you're not a subscriber to D&D Insider, you'll need to wait until the class is published in Player's Handbook 3.)
Finally, the Large rare Psychic Sentinel was designed to fit as a servitor for the githzerai. As a level 12 Elite Soldier, he fits well with the monastic warriors. The look is based on the psion-killer from the 3rd edition's Psionic Handbook.
That's it for today. If you have questions aboutLegendary Evils, feel free to ask them in the D&D Miniatures forum, and I'll do my best to answer them!
Until next time, have fun!
