Cairne Bloodhoof
Faction: Horde
Class: Warrior
Race: Tauren

Exclusive Preview by Patrick Sullivan

Creating the epic figures in World of Warcraft Minis is the coolest and most challenging part of creating a set. They’re cool because they’re the marquee characters, important to the lore and immediately identifiable to fans of the MMO. They also lend themselves to certain mechanics—whether it’s a raid boss or racial leader, they all have some defining characteristic. Thrall is the leader of the Horde, so he grants a huge bonus to all your Horde allies; Arugal mind controls people during the encounter in Shadowfang Keep, so he steals an opposing figure; and so on. Of course, that’s the challenge as well. There are many ways to represent a certain class, spec, or ability, but generally there’s only one way to get an epic right. They are so iconic, and people have expectations of what their favorite epics will play like. It’s also important for the epics to occupy their own space mechanically. Part of the coolness of Argual is that he plays way differently than every other figure in the game, and ideally every epic has that sort of uniqueness. Not every epic needs to be powerful in the sense of, “This epic goes into a very powerful army for competitive play,” but they should all be cool in the “Holy $&@% that thing is AWESOME” sense. The best ones hit all the bases: powerful, unique, flavorful, jaw-dropping. Like today’s preview, the chief, the leader of the Tauren, Cairne Bloodhoof.

Now, to begin with, Cairne looks pretty sweet during the weigh-in. With a 2 armor / 2 resist / 11 health frame, Cairne is bigger than nearly every other figure in the game. Not only that, but he hits like a truck too. A 3 tick for 7 dice main attack is no joke, especially on a body this big, but if Cairne was nothing but numbers, that wouldn’t make for a very exciting epic.

For those of you out of the loop, Cairne is the racial leader of the Tauren, and their city, Thunder Bluff, is high in the sky resting on a couple of mesas. If you enter the city with the intent of causing trouble, Cairne will be there to mess you up. And by “mess you up,” I mean, “kick you off the Bluff to your death below.” This is where his powers come into play. Now, just moving enemy characters around for dealing damage is productive. Figures like Vindicator Hadoon and Thangal are sensitive to adjacency, and knocking melee guys back could force some tick-ups before they can return to combat. You can knock a dude off a VP, or out of range of its healers. Everyone who’s played with or against Magistrix Kiala knows how good that effect is, and Cairne does this as he’s beating the daylights out of the opposing team. The real sweetness, though, is the crit.

If Cairne crits (not that hard on 7 dice) and would knock the opposing figure off the map, the figure is destroyed instead. Regardless of remaining health, regardless of honor. Cairne just kills them. Knocks them right off the ledge. Besides being the most fun I’ve had playing Minis, booting some fool is obviously very powerful as well. Even if your opponent tries their best to play around it, the power forces all of their figures into the middle of the map, close to each other but far away from the edges of the map. Not only does this constrict their options, it plays right into the hands of Cairne’s special Action Bar card.

Cairne’s Thunderclap is pretty freaking awesome as well. On its own, it’s an insane deal. One tick for 2 auto damage to one character is well above the curve, and Cairne does this to all adjacent enemies. Of course, it triggers Cairne’s movement power, so you can send all your opponents figures in every direction. I’ve seen plenty of sequences where Cairne uses his card, sends everyone every which way, immediately goes again, and then knocks some sucker off the cliff. It’s very hard to recover from that specific beatdown.

To let you in on a personal history, I’ve gamed pretty seriously for the last decade or so, either as a professional gamer or as a game designer. In that time, I’ve kind of seen it all from a gaming perspective and have become pretty desensitized to some of the fun parts of gaming. That’s not to say I don’t find it fun (of course I do, otherwise I wouldn’t do it as my job), it’s just that it takes something pretty special for me to totally lose myself in a gaming experience. I started working on World of Warcraft Minis near the end of Spoils of War development, and once I knew the game well enough to build my own armies, I built as many armies around Cairne as I could. Some were quite good, others not so much, but the reason I was building them was because Cairne was the most fun experience I had in gaming in quite some time. So, if you’re anything like me, please give this guy a whirl at least once in your life. Once you experience your first punt, you’ll thank me, I swear.
